Day Before Your Surgery
You must follow the instructions that have been provided to you. These will include what you may or may not eat or drink, as well as what medications you must take on the day of your surgery. If you are unclear about your instructions, please refer to your patient instruction handout for the number to call.
If you are a smoker, refrain from smoking prior to surgery. Speak to your family doctor or visit www.myquit.ca for support. Quitting six weeks before your surgery is ideal and will ensure the best outcomes for you. Any decrease in smoking will be beneficial.
Do not use any scented products or body lotions and do not shave the operative area. If you have been asked to purchase a chlorhexidine shower kit, please follow the instructions on the package. Read the instruction sheet. <link to sheet > You should have a shower with one sponge the night before your surgery and another shower with a second sponge on the morning of your surgery. If you have not been asked to purchase a chlorhexidine shower kit, please have a bath or shower the morning of your surgery and thoroughly was the area of your body to be operated on.
If you are going home the same day of your surgery, you must arrange for a responsible adult to pick you up after surgery. It is also recommended that you have a responsible adult remain with you on the first night after surgery.
