Professional practice at wdmh

Compassion in care. Empowered professionals. Excellence in practice.

Professional practice describes how care is delivered at WDMH; how health care professionals work together, use evidence to guide decisions, and continuously improve care so patients and families receive safe, compassionate, high-quality services close to home.

At WDMH, professional practice is interprofessional, supporting nursing, allied health professionals, physicians, and other care providers.  It ensures care is delivered within appropriate scopes of practice, aligned with professional standards, and supported by education, quality improvement, and shared decision-making.

Our Professional Practice Vision

To cultivate a professional practice culture that delivers exceptional, evidence-based care through collaboration, learning, and a just, healthy workplace putting patients, families and staff at the heart of everything we do.

Compassion in care. Empowered professionals. Excellence in practice.

This vision reflects WDMH's commitment to patient and family-centered care, a respectful and accountable work environment, continuous learning, and collaboration across disciplines and services.

Professional Practice Framework

Our professional practice framework illustrates how WDMH supports safe, high-quality care while fostering a respectful, collaborative, and accountable work environment.

Professional practice is reflected in the daily work of our teams and in hospital-wide initiatives focused on improvement and excellence:

  • Professionalism and Empowerment: Supporting full-scope practice through shared governance, including Unit Councils and the Professional Practice Advisory Committee (PPAC), with professional practice embedded across care teams.

  • Education and Development: Supporting staff with structured orientation, ongoing education (high-fidelity simulation, mock scenarios, in-class learning), interprofessional learning, and hands-on mentorship from clinical scholars.

  • Evidence-Based Practice and Safety: Advancing consistent, evidence-based practice through shared tools, review of practice standards, and the use of indicators and dashboards to monitor progress and guide improvement.

  • Innovation: Piloting and spreading new models of practice (e.g. Unit Councils), communicating successes as initiatives are achieved, and adapting approaches to meet the needs of a rural health care environment.
