A Tree with Deep Roots
July 17, 2026
A
small sapling that first came to WDMH during the COVID-19 pandemic is returning
to the hospital as a healthy young tree.
Winchester
District Memorial Hospital (WDMH) is grateful to receive a special tree
donation from Carolyn Hayden and Alina D'Asti. The tree began as a tiny sapling
from South Nation Conservation’s annual tree giveaway and was received by Alina
while she was completing a physiotherapy placement at WDMH during the pandemic.
Alina and her family planted the sapling in a pot and
cared for it over the years. It has now
outgrown its city home, and the family is
donating it back to WDMH, where it will be planted on hospital grounds as a living tribute to the dedication, resilience and compassion shown by healthcare workers throughout the pandemic.
“What started as a small sapling has grown into a beautiful tree, and it
feels fitting to bring it back to the hospital,” said
Carolyn Hayden. “We’re happy to see it have a place where it can continue to grow and provide
shade and enjoyment for years to come.”
Once planted, the tree will add shade
and beauty to the hospital grounds for staff, patients, visitors and community members to enjoy. It will also
stand as a simple reminder that kindness can keep growing, even after difficult
times.
