Bringing Education into Focus
April 23, 2026
Winchester District Memorial Hospital is helping shape the future of
rural health care by training the next generation of doctors right here in the
community.
As a teaching hospital, WDMH supports hands-on learning while continuing
to care for local patients. One area of focus is point-of-care ultrasound,
where medical residents use small, handheld devices at the bedside to see
what’s happening inside the body in real time. This helps them make quicker,
more informed decisions when caring for patients.
This type of practical training builds confidence for future doctors and
supports fast, high-quality care close to home, something that’s especially
important in rural communities.
WDMH’s rural medical education program was recently featured in the Canadian
Family Physician Journal. The article was co-written by WDMH physicians
involved in the hospital’s teaching program and highlights how effective
training can be delivered without large budgets or complex systems. With the
right tools and a hands-on, flexible approach, family medicine residents at
WDMH develop strong ultrasound skills that directly support patient care in a
rural setting.
